Review: Topshop Lipstick in Screen Siren

Hello! I’m writing my first review in more than a year, wow. I’ll be reviewing Topshop’s Lips in Screen Siren, which is my current holy grail red lip colour!

CQ-10

Topshop unveiled its makeup line in 2010, but I didn’t really take note of it because, let’s face it, Topshop isn’t really known for specialising in cosmetics. I brushed it off, thinking that it’d fizzle out within a year or two. But here we are, 4 years later, and it’s still going strong!

From the website:

Creamy finish lipstick to smooth, moisturise and nourish lips. Apply for fabulous colour and moisturised finish, wear alone or add gloss for an extra shine.

I was actually introduced to this product by my friend, Yun Rong! She’s a fellow makeup junkie, and swears by it as well. I was really skeptical at first because we both have different styles and beauty preferences, but she won me over by letting me swatch her own tube instead. ☺️Even after trying it out, I was still not very convinced and spent almost half an hour in the store looking around and testing other shades of the same product! However, as I learnt from other reviews that I’ve read, different shades of the same product can have different consistencies due to the pigment they carry and the ingredients used to create that pigment. And so, the more I stood there, the more doubtful I became. I finally decided to try it out because there was a discount for students on that day, and I’m so glad I did, because it has really proven itself to be a worthy tool in my makeup pouch!

Packaging

First off, packaging! People say don’t judge a book by its cover, but when it comes to products, packaging plays a huge part in whether or not I buy something 🙈 Topshop lipsticks come in a metal case, which is sturdy and protects the product. The design is pretty cute (bonus points!) and the ends are flat, which enables you to set them down on a counter steadily. My pet peeve is impractical packaging, especially if the product inside is really good. So wasted. 👿

Application

As far as application goes, it does live up to its description. It’s creamy and easy to apply, and goes on smoothly on the first swipe. Of course, you have to ensure that your canvas is already smooth and moisturised! If you have dry lips (like mine), do dab on a little bit of lip balm to even the playing field. (:

When applied at full force, Screen Siren is a red-hot, well, siren. It gives a satin-y finish and stays put, even after eating! (Although you do have to touch up if you’re really particular about it.) There are a variety of ways to apply this lipstick too! Blot it on for a sheer pink stain, swipe it on for a regular pop of red, or take a tissue and press it against your lips after applying for a matte finish.

Price Point

For me, price is a huge deciding factor because as a student, I don’t have that much cash to spare. Screen Siren retails at S$19, but I got it at around S$17 I think, thanks to the student discount. ☺️It’s pretty affordable, especially compared to drugstore lipsticks such as Revlon and Maybelline, where some products can go up to S$20 – S$25!

Overall: 8.5/10

The versatility of Screen Siren really makes it a great go-to shade to have in your everyday bag. To anyone thinking about getting it, I hope this post makes a strong case!

Oscar Trends: Orange Lips – Makeup Tutorial

We’re back with another tutorial, this time of the hugely popular orange lip trend that’s been making its rounds on runways and award shows. It’s been spotted way back in 2010 on Pixie Lott, Chloe Sevingy and Beyonce, and the trend has filtered down to the red carpet, with it being seen at the Golden Globes, Peoples’ Choice Awards, Grammys, Academy Awards, to name a few- not forgetting various movie premieres and parties.

Smoky Rose Makeup Tutorial

As mentioned in one of my earlier blog posts, I did a makeup tutorial with my friend Pepita! Well, this is the first of two that we did. That day was a particularly productive day in terms of filming, so the next few videos will show us wearing the same clothes 😛 Continue reading “Smoky Rose Makeup Tutorial”
